Chemical indicators for moist heat steam sterilization (autoclaves)

The chemical indicators (MVI) provided by Safe Sterilization ApS are designed for process control of the sterilization processes. The chemical indicator verifies that steam has penetrated to where the chemical indicator has been placed.

The chemical indicators are used at least once a day as a process indicator, indicating that the physical parameters of the sterilization process are met. Chemical indicators are complementary to biological indicators. The biological indicators are used to verify the killing effect of the sterilization process on microorganisms.

Product description

The chemical indicators are manufactured in accordance with the requirements of the standard DS/EN ISO 11140-1 Class 4.

The chemical indicators verify if the physical parameters such as temperature, time, and presence of dry saturated water vapor are achieved. If all parameters are obtained, the indicator changes colour from white to black.

When the chemical indicator is placed in cassettes or autoclave bags, the indicators will confirm that steam has penetrated to the location where the indicator is located.

The use of chemical indicators verifies if the critical parameters of time, temperature, and dry saturated water vapor are achieved. Therefore, the chemical indicators must be placed in the autoclave where it is considered most difficult to sterilize, so they verify the process at its most critical places. The chemical indicators are used alongside equipment to be sterilized and can be placed in cassettes or autoclave bags (if used), so the placements are as close to everyday use as possible.

If the chemical indicator does not change colour from white to black after exposure to a sterilisation process, the cause of this must be clarified and corrected. Please consult the manual you received along with your equipment. After troubleshooting your equipment, repeat the test with chemical indicator.

The chemical indicators can be used for the following combinations of temperature and time:

  • 121°C i minimum 8 minutter
  • 134°C i minimum 3 minutter

Always read and follow the instruction on the box.

Please refer to our User guide and Recommendations for the healthcare sector on our website, Danish industry only.
