User guide for chemical indicators for dry heat sterilization

Use

The sterilizer must be checked daily using chemical indicators. The chemical indicators show if the physical parameters of time and temperature, are met during the sterilization process.

Placement

The chemical indicators are placed where it is most difficult for the heat to penetrate the goods in the dry heat sterilizer. The chemical indicators can be placed in cassettes (if used), so the location is as close as possible to everyday use of the sterilizer as possible. The sterilizer is loaded and run sterilization cycle as usual.

Sterilization time by the most used heat/time combinations

  • 160°C for a minimum of 2 hours
  • 170°C for a minimum of 1 hour
  • 180°C for a minimum of ½ hour

The sterilization time is measured from the moment the specified temperature has been achieved in the instruments.
Perform a normal sterilization program with instruments in the dry sterilizer.

After sterilization

The chemical indicators should be checked immediately after emptying the sterilizer.

Check if the chemical indicator has changed colour to green and if the colour shift is homogeneous across the entire indicator.

If the colour remains red or yellow after sterilization, repeat the sterilization process with a new indicator. If the same result reoccurs, the sterilizer should be inspected, and corrective action taken, to remedy the problem according to the clinic's procedure.

We recommend storing the used chemical indicators for a minimum of 3 months as documentation for daily testing.

Fill in results in a logbook as per internal standards.
